The first film in the series Letzte Bilder: Sterbehilfe im Film, presented by Assisted Lab in collaboration with Kinok St. Gallen, was Alejandro Amenábar’s acclaimed drama Mar adentro (The Sea Inside, 2004).

Based on the life of Ramón Sampedro, the film tells the story of a former sailor who, following a diving accident, lived for almost three decades with tetraplegia and became one of Spain’s most prominent advocates for the right to die. Refusing to accept a life he experienced as one of profound dependence and confinement, Ramón embarked on a long legal and public struggle for the right to determine the timing and manner of his own death. Featuring an outstanding performance by Javier Bardem, Mar adentro explores questions of autonomy, dignity, suffering, and care with remarkable emotional depth.

At the same time, the film is far more than an intimate portrait of one individual. By bringing Ramón Sampedro’s story to a wide audience, it became a major reference point in public and political debates on assisted dying, both in Spain and internationally. Praised by many for humanising the issue and criticised by others for its portrayal of disability, the film illustrates the powerful role that cultural representations can play in shaping public opinion and influencing legal and ethical discussions. More than two decades after its release, Mar adentro remains one of the most influential cinematic engagements with assisted dying.
